Max Holloway e Brian ortega were scheduled to fight for the featherweight belt at UFC 226 in June. However, the champion was banned from the match after symptoms of concussion were detected. With medical clearance, a new title fight was confirmed at UFC 231, on December 8th in Toronto (CAN).

It was the third time in 2018 alone that Holloway was pulled from a fight. In March, the Hawaiian would face Frankie Edgar At UFC 222, however, in February, he was removed from the card due to a foot injury. In April at UFC 223, Max was called in a hurry to face Khabib Nurmagomedov in a lightweight title fight, but left the fight due to problems with the weight cut.
Max Holloway won the featherweight belt by knocking out José Aldo at UFC 212 in June 2017. In a rematch at UFC 218, 'Blessed' beat the Brazilian in the same way and retained the belt. The 26-year-old fighter remains undefeated since August 2013, when he was beaten by Conor McGregor. The Hawaiian has 19 triumphs and three setbacks in his career.
The challenger, Brian ortega remains undefeated in mixed martial arts. 'T-City' has 14 triumphs and one fight without result in his career. In his last commitment, the North American knocked out the veteran Frankie Edgar, at UFC 222, in March this year.
