Before UFC 196, rumors that Conor McGregor could move up to stay at welterweight and face the champion Robbie Lawler for the title in his next fight shook the MMA backstage. With the Irishman's defeat, however, the plans were frustrated, but McGregor's executioner, Nate diaz, could replace him and be the next challenger for the belt in the 77 kg category. The person who guaranteed it was the president of Ultimate Dana White himself.

“You know what would make perfect sense? It's not the fight I'm planning right now, I just think Nate diaz x Robbie Lawler it would make perfect sense. His brother, Nick, beat Robbie, and Robbie is the current welterweight world champion. Nate became very, very popular after winning Conor McGregor. Let’s see what happens…” said the manager, who recalled Lawler’s defeat to Nick Diaz in the UFC in 2004, the only knockout suffered by the champion in his entire career.

Furthermore, Dana also joked about the jackpot that Diaz made with his triumph over McGregor and said that, possibly, the controversial bad boy will never set foot in the octagon again after receiving his check. “Nate made a lot of money tonight. On leaving the octagon they asked him what he would do with the money, and he said he would buy a yacht. Nate will probably go out to sea on his yacht, and we may never see him again (laughs). I find it difficult to predict what one of the Diaz brothers will do. Who knows?” he concluded.
