Demian Maia confirms interest in farewell fight in Brazil, but points out conditions

Brazilian icon in MMA, Demian Maia He has never hidden the fact that he is very close to the end of his sporting career. After having the last fight in his contract with the UFC, the São Paulo native still hasn't declared his career with the company over. The veteran confirmed his interest in performing once again in his country, but the decision comes up against an important situation.

“I fought my whole life in the UFC. It is my home. I want to have my last fight (in my country), and that depends on what happens in Brazil (in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic). It's a feeling my manager and I have. If there are events with an audience here soon, I think it will be in the UFC's interest for me to fight. I'm waiting, but I want to do one more and I'm training twice a day”, said Maia, in an interview with 'MMA fighting'.

If he is not served by Ultimate, Demian has other options for his future. According to the São Paulo native, after his last performance, in June, he was invited to work in the organization promoted by Chael Sonnen, Submission Underground, which deals exclusively with grappling matches. For Maia, this is a pleasant possibility.

“If I face someone from the new generation of jiu-jitsu, he needs to be known. If I face an MMA guy, I'll give you an example: Sonnen sent me a message, after my last fight, asking if I was interested in facing him. Tony Ferguson ou Kamaru Usman. This is the type of fight that not only draws attention in the jiu-jitsu community, but also in MMA. Everyone likes it”, he concluded.

Professional in mixed martial arts since 2001, Demian, for years, was a prominent name within the UFC. After his presentation against Belal Muhammad |, the Brazilian reached the mark of 39 commitments in MMA. The 43-year-old fighter currently has 28 wins and 11 losses. In Ultimate, the Tupiniquim competed for two belts: one in middleweight (up to 83,9kg) and another in welterweight (up to 77kg).
