Jon Jones He is the former light heavyweight champion and remains among the best fighters in the history of mixed martial arts with his enviable resume. However, the history of problems in his personal life made 'Bones' compromise his legacy. In the last three years, he has played only twice and was suspended for 15 months by the United States Anti-Doping Agency. However, his coach, Brandon Gibson, believes that the time away from the octagon prolonged the athlete's career.

"He (Jon Jones) is not having his brain shaken (during his time away). He's not suffering from concussions. He's taking care of his body and mind, and that's important – at the level these guys (athletes) are at. This is not an aspect that comes with sparring or anything like that. The time away where we don't have impact, where his body isn't being beaten and broken, where we continue to evolve skills and techniques and further develop Jon as a martial artist is crucial. He is 31 years old, he still has a long career ahead of him, and he (Jones) really believes that this time away has prolonged his career a lot”, said Brandon in an interview with the North American program The MMA Hour.

Gibson considers the routine of MMA athletes to be detrimental to performance inside the Octagon in the long term. He also explains that many fighters who are in middle age do not perform well due to the wear and tear they have had. Therefore, Brandon does work focused on the technical aspect with Jones and the benefits will be demonstrated in the fight with Alexander Gustafson at UFC 232.

“If he was still fighting three to five times a year like he did when he was younger, I believe it would burn him out sooner. I think that's why you start to see guys in their early thirties who are slow, who don't react, who don't pull the trigger, they don't perform like they used to, and I think that's because they overtrain, lots of camps and fights. So having this kind of pre-camp, where we just focus on technique, has been really good for him (Jon Jones). And this will be demonstrated in the fight. We had a long time away before the fight against Ovince saint preux, as well as against the rematch against 'DC', and he came back in shape, focused and renewed in many ways”, concluded Gibson.
