The rivalry between Fabricio Werdum e Junior Gypsy gained even more strength. After Cigano stated that his rival had refused to face him at UFC Halifax, on February 19th, it was the gaucho's turn to speak out about the situation. Angered, Werdum fired at his compatriot and made two challenges: first, a fight for the interim heavyweight belt. Afterwards, he proposes an old-fashioned duel, at Cigano's academy.

“I saw that the Stipe Miocic He has a problem with his contract, he wants to increase his purse to renew, so if he doesn't fight, as I'm ranked first, I'll challenge Cigano to a fight for the interim belt. And that's not all. After this fight, regardless of the result, I'm going to his gym (American Top Team) so we can fight inside, me and him, a real man's thing, to put an end to this nonsense of saying that I'm running away. I'm going to show him who runs away, show him what it was like in the old days, show him that he's a shit kid who arrived yesterday and is making a fool of himself. Whoever wins this fight behind closed doors will have the right to post the result on social media so people can see who is who”, declared the gaúcho, in an interview with the website 'Portal do Vale Tudo'.

Asked about what the fight suggested at the gym would be like, Fabrício explained that it would follow the rules of the early days of Vale Tudo: no round or time rules.

“I'm going to call Libório (ATT leader), who is my friend, I respect him a lot, and as a sign of respect, let him know that I'm arriving with my team to fight with Cigano. I take the plane with Rafael Cordeiro and my brother and go to his gym to fight behind closed doors, until someone hits or knocks me out, there's no time, there's no round, there's nothing, not even this thing of stopping because you can't handle it, Why are you tired. Just for when someone hits or gets knocked out, the old fashioned way”, he challenged.

To conclude, Werdum once again provoked Cigano, calling him retarded, alluding to the two defeats suffered by the Santa Catarina native against Cain Velazquez. “He keeps talking nonsense, saying that I'm a lie that worked, and I'm going to show him that it's not like that. He's thinking I'm that fighter from the past, but I'm going to show him the reality. This is the challenge that I am launching to Cigano, who is retarded, only talks nonsense, I think it is the effect of the beatings he took from Cain Velásquez”, he concluded.

The two former champions have faced each other before, in 2008, at UFC 90. At the time, Cigano was making his UFC debut and won by knockout in the first round. Werdum left the organization shortly after and went to fight for Strikeforce, only returning in 2012, beginning a journey that took him to the heavyweight belt.
