After the triumph and already calmer, Nelson tried to minimize what happened and assured that he did not kick Big John, but just 'pushed' the referee.

“It was a push. It was more like, 'What's up?!' We talked in the octagon, I was like, 'Man, he was knocked out,' and he was like, 'No, he wasn't,' and I was like, 'Man, I know what a knockout is, I knock people out for a living, it's the what I do.' Just because he didn't turn his eyes or tremble doesn't mean he isn't”, said Nelson, who justified his attitude by the friendship and respect he has towards the Brazilian fighter.

“I didn’t want to hurt Pezão any more than necessary. I got caught up in the moment because it was like I was beating someone up, and I thought, 'Man, I've done it!' This hurt my feelings. I apologized to Big John, but I wouldn't take it back. It hurt me to have to keep hitting a guy who no longer needed to be hit.”
