UFC 196, held last Saturday (5), was not just bad news for Conor McGregor. Despite having lost his undefeated record in the UFC when he suffered a submission from Nate diaz, the Irishman achieved a new record: he obtained the largest declared purse in the history of Ultimate.

According to a list released by the Nevada Athletic Commission, McGregor received a $1 million salary to step into the Octagon in Las Vegas. The amount exceeds the amount pocketed by Anderson Silva in 2015, who took home US$800 ($600 fixed + US$200 victory bonus) at UFC 183, against Nick Diaz. Nate, in turn, also took home a fat payout: half a million dollars, without receiving an extra payment for the victory achieved.

It is worth remembering that this is only the payment declared by the UFC to the commissions, which does not necessarily reflect the total amount pocketed by the athletes. The total payment may include money from sponsors, slices of pay-per-view sales, as well as “outside” amounts given by the UFC.
