Aldo's coach admits error in strategy against McGregor: 'It wasn't quite like that'

Dedé Pederneiras also explained his statement that the former champion's defeat would have been a "lucky blow" for the Irishman

The lightning defeat of José Aldo for Conor McGregor at UFC 194 in just 13 seconds, it shocked MMA fans and the Brazilian's team. After the setback, coach Dedé Pederneiras went so far as to say that the Irishman's knockout had been “a stroke of luck”. However, a week after Manauara lost the featherweight belt, the leader of Nova União returned to evaluate the clash and said that there had been a strategic error on the part of his pupil.

“Actually, the strategy wasn’t exactly that. I think Aldo thought he had time to get in there and end the fight. He saw the space and played. Unfortunately, the other player also had the reaction to play, and Aldo met his strike, just as he met Aldo's strike. Both moving their heads to the opposite side, they encountered the same blow that the other threw. The two played crossed, but the guy's one arrived first. If Aldo’s arrived first, the result would have been different”, said Dedé, in an interview with the “Combate” channel website.

Dedé also explained his statement about McGregor’s possible “lucky” move. “He was really happy. Let's say the blow wasn't lucky, it was a programmed blow, but the hit was on the chin due to the punch meeting the target, I think it was his luck. We trained, we saw him do this several times. Every time the opponent throws his right hand, he throws the blow over the top. (…) A blow like that coming 13 seconds into the fight, like that, is once in a lifetime and never again. I'm not saying that the blow can't go in, a cross like that to the chin. It can come in, but in the same situation, in a very short time, this blow hits and ends the fight, it's once in life and once in death. Not the blow itself, the cross to the chin, but at the beginning of the fight, the guy crossing and the other crossing with him, his catching first and the guy falling, it will never happen again”, he assured.

Finally, the coach also cited a possible overconfidence on the part of the former Brazilian champion as the cause of the setback. “I'm not saying anxiety, maybe overconfidence, because he was doing very well. He was so confident of victory that (he thought), “I’m going to play and it will catch on.” The decision there is one of thousandths of a second. Either you attack, or you leave. He decided to attack, and the other played against him in order to defend himself. It was an attack blow, in order to stop the attack movement on him. How do you tell a super champion guy like Aldo that he made a bad decision?” he concluded.
