For many years, the North American Chad Mendes was the main opponent of José Aldo. After beating him twice, however, the Brazilian found himself facing another antagonist: the Irishman Conor McGregor. Now, Mendes can live an even more unusual experience and end up replacing the featherweight champion in the main fight of UFC 189, if he is not physically capable of acting. Leaving the old rivalry aside, the athlete from Team Alpha Male he even offered to “represent” Aldo and beat the Irish McGregor for Manauara.

“I never wish for any fighter to get hurt. I've been through this in wrestling, I know how bad it is. But this is a big opportunity for me, so if Aldo can't fight, I'll go in there and beat McGregor for him. (…) I think both of us (me and Aldo) are dangerous and could finish a guy like Conor McGregor on any night”, said Mendes, in an interview with the “Combate” channel website.

Furthermore, the American sent a direct message to McGregor, and appeared very dissatisfied with the Irishman's reaction. “Dana asked me if I would be up for it and, with 100% certainty, I want to go in there and face the Conor McGregor. I don't like him, he doesn't like me. I'm going to love hitting him in the face. (…) McGregor, I heard in an interview that Dana White came into the room saying that I would be a possible opponent and that you replied that we were all the same. If you think we're all the same, that I'm just like Aldo, Frankie Edgar or even any of the guys you've already faced, then you'll be in serious trouble, because I'm going to beat you up so much that you won't even remember who you are the next day”, he said.

Until further notice, José Aldo faces Conor McGregor in the main fight of UFC 189, an event scheduled for July 11th, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, in Las Vegas (USA). According to McGregor's coach, John Kavanagh, the official decision if Aldo fights or if he will be replaced by Chad Mendes, Ultimate's plan B, will only come out the day before the duel, moments before the official weigh-in.
