The project was approved by a vote in the Senate, as had happened in the last six years. However, it was necessary to go through the Assembly so that the state governor, Andrew Cuomo, could sign it. Thus, New York should remain the only North American state to consider mixed martial arts fighting illegal.

The UFC was optimistic about passing the law, having even scheduled a date to hold an event at the legendary Madison Square Garden gym in December. The organization's middleweight champion, the New Yorker Chris Weidman, which he expected to face Luke Rockhold at MSG, he wrote a letter to the representatives asking for the legalization of the sport, but to no avail.

As a result, UFC president Dana White did not hide his irritation with the defeat. “The corruption of New York politicians is DISGUSTING,” wrote the leader on his Twitter account.

The UFC has been planning to hold an event at Madison Square Garden for years. The gym has been the stage for several fights that have entered boxing history, such as Rocky Marciano x Joe Louis, and the first two clashes between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. There is speculation that the event planned by the UFC for New York, UFC 194, will be transferred to a city in Canada.
