Overeem and Werdum have faced each other twice in the past. In the first of them, at PRIDE, in 2006, the Brazilian won with a submission. In the rematch, in 2011, Overeem won the judges' decision.
“First of all, many congratulations to Werdum. He has evolved a lot as an MMA fighter. He's always been tricky with his ground skills, but now he's a warrior in striking and he's complete. Now, the heavyweight category is completely open,” said the Dutchman, in an interview with the North American website “MMA Fighting”.
“He’s definitely evolved, but I’ve evolved too. I think I can beat him. I've been following his progress over the years and I can say that I really want to face him. I see weaknesses in your game. He's a great athlete, he's doing very well at the moment, but he has weaknesses, and I feel like I'm the guy who can expose that”, added the fighter.
