The result of the main fight of UFC 188, last Saturday (13), could play a fundamental role in the hopes of junior gypsy within the organization. After seeing Fabricio Werdum finalize Cain Velazquez and win the heavyweight belt, Cigano saw his chances of challenging for the title again increase, which seemed unlikely when it was in the hands of Velasquez, who had already defeated him twice in the past.

The former champion of the category, who was even mentioned by Dana White as a possible next challenger for the belt, admitted that the result of the event could benefit him. “When I talked about a fourth fight with Velasquez, people didn't like the idea. So, I was fighting against politics, the politics of the event, of the sport. So, I think it was good for me, because Werdum, being the champion, will end up renewing the ideas of the category and who knows, maybe I'll have my chance to regain what I want so much, which is the belt", explained Cigano, in interview on the official UFC website.

The Santa Catarina native praised Werdum's performance in the main fight of the Mexican event. “What was clear there was Werdum’s superiority in jiu-jitsu. I said before: Velasquez won't try to take Werdum down, because Werdum is very good on the ground. And that's what he was doing for most of the fight, keeping it on the cage – which is what he did to me. However, when he tried for the takedown, Werdum, with his great jiu-jitsu, applied a guillotine choke that was sensational. He is to be congratulated. It was a war, with the two exchanging many blows, and then that guillotine came out. Congratulations to Werdum”, he analyzed.

If the fight between Cigano and Werdum goes ahead, it would be a rematch. The two faced each other in 2008, at UFC 90, an event in which Cigano made his debut for the organization. Widely considered the underdog, the then-newbie surprised by knocking out Werdum in the first round.
