According to the publication, Wanderlei did not appear when summoned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), the event's regulatory body, to take routine exams, contrary to what Sonnen and the other fighters did.
Therefore, the NSAC did not grant the former PRIDE champion a license to participate in the event, with Belfort becoming his immediate replacement. The case would have had very bad repercussions within the UFC, and there is even the possibility of Wanderlei's contract being terminated due to the episode. The UFC has not yet officially commented on the case.
If the situation is confirmed, Belfort will fight again for the first time since the ban on testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), of which he was a supporter. Interestingly, the return to fighting would take place at the same event in which Chris Weidman will defend his title against Lyoto Machida – Belfort, initially, was the North American's challenger, but was removed from the fight, which would originally take place in May, after the ban on TRT.
