Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), stated that Chael Sonnen did not undergo any type of surgery before his fight with Rashad evans, at UFC 167, and that the broadcast of the news was the result of a communication failure.
This week, information was released by the Canadian program “Off the Record” that Sonnen had part of his colon removed on the eve of the fight with Evans, in November. Kizer, however, stated that the surgery did not exist. “I checked with the UFC. They checked with Chael and his team that he did not undergo any surgery before the fight with Rashad evans. According to Chael, the interviewer asked him a question and Chael shyly did not answer the question directly. The interviewer concluded that the answer was affirmative”, explained the director.
When asked about the issue during the program, Sonnen responded: “I confess I'm surprised you have this information, but I don't make excuses for not fighting.” On his Twitter account, Michael Landsberg, host of “Off the Record”, admitted that he understood Sonnen's response as confirmation.
“He won't deny it, which for me is the same as admitting it. He just doesn’t like being seen as a guy who makes excuses,” she wrote.
This was not the first controversy involving Sonnen and Landsberg. In 2011, the two carried out a tense interview, in which the fighter seemed uncomfortable with the presenter's questions and left the studio with the program still in progress.
