After several rounds of popular voting, the athlete who will appear on the cover of the game “EA Sports UFC”, a video game franchise of the largest MMA organization on the planet, was defined.
Jon Jones, light heavyweight champion who had already been nominated before voting began, will be joined by Alexander Gustafson, first placed in the category ranking. Interestingly, the two athletes are involved in the biggest recent rivalry at 93 kg. They faced each other at UFC 165, in September, with Jones winning the judges' decision after a close fight.
To achieve the feat, Gustafsson beat the former welterweight champion, Georges St Pierre. The result, in fact, prevented a fair outcome for the UFC, as the Canadian had announced shortly before that he would step away from fighting and give up his belt.
“It’s a thrill and an honor to appear on the cover of EA Sports UFC. I want to thank all my fans who campaigned tirelessly and voted for me”, celebrated the Swede. “I am proud to have this support not only from my country, Sweden, and Europe, but also from people all over the planet. It’s a great victory that motivates me to become the best light heavyweight in the world.”
After 11 million votes, Gustafsson stood out in the election that initially included 15 other names: José Aldo, Michael Bisping, Daniel Cormier, Dominick Cruz, Junior “Cigano” dos Santos, Urijah faber, Benson Henderson, John hendricks, Demetrious Johnson, Ronda Rousey, Miesha Tate, Chris Weidman, Chael Sonnen, Anthony Pettis, in addition to St. Pierre.
The game, which will be available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, will be released in the spring, between March and June 2014.
