The fight started with Strickland walking towards the Brazilian, but without attacking. Poatan, in turn, used his wingspan to hit the North American with straight blows and kicks to the waistline. The knockout came after just over two minutes, when he connected with a left cross and knocked Sean to his knees. The rival still tried to get up, but another blow almost 'nailed' Strickland to the fence and forced the referee to stop the dispute.

With the result, Poatan, who was outside the category's ranking, achieved his sixth victory as a professional in seven fights – three of them in the UFC – and secured his chance at the title. On the other hand, Strickland, who was fourth in the weight rankings, suffered his fourth defeat in 29 battles as an MMA athlete.
