Known for being an excellent provocateur during his career as an MMA fighter, the North American Chael Sonnen believes that the prospect of heavyweights (up to 120,2kg) Tom aspinall should follow the same 'path'. In an interview with the website 'B.J. Penn', the former middleweight (up to 83,9kg) criticized the way the Brit speaks in front of the cameras and insinuated that he himself is getting in the way of his goal of getting a title shot in the future.

“(Tom) Aspinall gives interviews like a 13-year-old fan. Aspinall says in an interview that he should not receive a title shot. Someone should, he's not ready for it. Okay, we have a young guy who wants to show a sense of humility, who should never have gone into an interview saying that,” Sonnen said.
The former UFC fighter recalled his old days as a provocateur and stated that, if he worked with Aspinall, he would quickly get the Brit a title shot.
“If I had time and he hadn't irritated me so much, I would have said, 'Don't you ever say anything else, every interview and press conference you go to, I'm going to show up with a megaphone and make a whole fuss. I'm going to make a big deal out of it. You stand there and don't say anything, I'll have you fighting for the belt in 12 months'. That’s the plan and, anyway, you’re getting in the way”, criticized the North American.
Considered one of the biggest revelations in the heavyweight division, Tom was hired by Ultimate in 2020 and, in five fights, he won all by knockout or submission. The British prospect has an MMA record of 12 wins and two setbacks.
