Author of spectacular submission to Anderson Silva, Ryo Chonan announces retirement

The 36-year-old Japanese will end his career after his next fight in October

Protagonist of one of the most spectacular finishes of the now extinct PRIDE, and against the fighter who would become one of the greatest in the history of MMA, the Japanese Ryo Chonan, who won Anderson Silva with a flying heel hook in 2004, he announced, this Tuesday (6), that he is about to end his career.

Chonan, who won the “2004 Submission of the Year” award, revealed that his next fight will be his last as a professional. According to the website “Fight Sports Asia”, the duel will be against the current welterweight champion Dan Hornbuckle, on October 20th, in the main fight of the event DEEP: Tribe Tokyo Fight.

The historic victory of Ryo Chonan, now 36 years old, over Anderson Silva it happened in the fourth fight of PRIDE Shockwave 2004, on December 31st. The event, held at the Saitama Super Arena, in Japan, saw the defeat of two other Brazilians in the main fights: Rodrigo Minotauro, who ended up defeated by Fedor Emelianenko, and Wanderlei Silva, which did not pass through the New Zealander Mark Hunt.
