“When you saw a (Jon) Jones fight, there were people who dressed up as empty chairs. Fewer and fewer people were interested, that was how the story would be told, but I don't know if I agree. I don't know if people have lost interest in Jones. I think Jon has lost interest in light heavyweight. This division is no longer interesting to him. Perhaps, he looked at some of those opponents as if they were not worthy. Jones needs to regain interest,” Sonnen said.
Aware of Jones' interest in moving to the heavyweight division, Sonnen believes he will rediscover his motivation in the new category and cited some of the challenges he will face.
“I think that’s what the heavyweights represent. Jones won't see people dressed up in empty seats for a significant period of time. There will be three huge fights waiting for him now: (Francis) Ngannou, (Ciryl) Gane and (Stipe) Miocic. Any way you want and in any order you want. These will be fascinating combinations”, said Chael.
About to complete two years away from the octagon, Jones is waiting to make his debut in the new division, while discussing an adjustment in his salaries with Ultimate. Former light heavyweight champion, the American has a record of 26 triumphs and only one setback in professional MMA.
