“He knocked out (Gilbert) Durinho in two rounds, knocked out (Jorge) Masvidal in two rounds and had to go to war with (Colby) Covington. Usman this year not only defended the belt three times, but also made a leap in terms of profile, visibility and marketability. Everything is on a new level for Usman and that's just because he went out there, knocked out Masvidal, beat Covington, who is a guy many consider dangerous again and also knocked out his former training partner after getting injured. Fantastic year for the champion. That’s my choice”, said Cormier.

Champion since 2019, Kamaru Usman stepped into the octagon three times in the 2021 season. In February, the division leader knocked out his former training partner Gilbert Durtinho. In April, another fast track victory, this time in the rematch against Jorge masvidal. On UFC 269 in November, the 'Nigerian Nightmare' won another confrontation against his opponent Colby covington, this time, in the unanimous decision of the judges.
