Former double Ultimate champion and current commentator for the company, Daniel Cormier appears to have changed his opinion about who should be the next challenger for the lightweight belt (up to 70,3kg). Supporter of Islam makhachev, DC had suggested that the Russian would already be able to face the champion – which bothered Justin gaethje. The analyst, however, changed his stance after the North American's show against Michael chandler No. UFC 268.

“Chandler arrived throwing all his strength, but Gaethje was there, striking, responding, doing his job. All the mess with Gaethje last week, I said what I felt and he felt offended. (…) Last night he did what he needed to do and maintained his champion level, because he faced Michael chandler and defeated him. He takes his hat off to Justin gaethje and, honestly, I believe he will be the next guy to fight for the belt”, said DC, on his channel on YouTube.

If confirmed as the next challenger, Justin still doesn't know who he will face. With an eye on the dispute, the former interim champion could face the winner between the champion, Charles of the Bronx e Dustin poirier, who exchange forces on December 11th.

Gaethje's victory over Chandler not only marked one of the best performances between two athletes in the 2021 season. The triumph made the former interim champion return to the path of victories after the stumble suffered against Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2020, valid for the unification of the lightweight title.
