With the definitive extinction of Strikeforce in January this year, competition between major MMA events became even more restricted. Aiming to fill the gap left behind, in 2012, the MMA World Series of Fighting, or simply WSOF, which is holding its second edition this Saturday (23).
WSOF 2, which takes place at Revel Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey (USA), the main fight will be the meeting of UFC veterans Andrei Arlosvski and Anthony Johnson. Arlovski fought for Ultimate between 2000 and 2008 and was the organization's 11th heavyweight champion. Johnson spent five years, between 2007 and 2012, at the biggest MMA event on the planet. The North American was defeated by Vitor belfort, at UFC Rio 2, in his last fight before being fired.
Brazilians are also present on fight night. On the main card, the country has Marlon moraes, Paulo Filho and Gesias Cavalcante. On the preliminary card, three other names represent Brazil: Alexandre “Pulga” Pimentel, Danillo “Índio” Villefort and Igor Gracie.
Despite all the investments and signings, recently the WSOF signed former UFC welterweight title challenger Jon Fitch, the event is experiencing structural problems that risk its completion. Both the canvas cage as the protective pads of the corners have not been approved by the New Jersey Athletic Commission. The organization, chaired by former New Zealand fighter Ray Sefo, is racing against time to resolve issues before the fights begin.
