Sonnen accuses fighters of avoiding confrontation with Chimaev: 'They are scared'

In a statement to 'ESPN', the North American questions the athletes' refusal to fight against the Swede

Famous for expressing his honest opinions about the world of MMA, Chael Sonnen criticized the welterweight category (up to 77kg.). The former fighter and now commentator believes that all athletes in the division are 'scared' of the growth of Khamzat Shimaev within Ultimate. The statement was given on the program 'Ariel & The Bad Guy', gives ESPN North-American.

“The welterweight division has been a little strange right now. Fighters need to get up, work and get busy. I don't know what these guys are doing. They were all afraid of (Khamzat) Chimaev. They don't want to admit it, but they stayed. After all, are you fighters or not?” asked Sonnen.

With just three fights in Ultimate and at 26 years old, Khamzat Shimaev It’s a big promise from the organization. In 2020, there were three triumphs in a short space of time against John Phillips, rhys mckee e Gerald meerschaert. The three fights combined were finished in 4m38s.

Currently, the Swede occupies 14th place in the welterweight rankings and was close to facing third, Leon edwards, on March 13th. However, he did not recover well after contracting COVID-19 and was forced to withdraw from the card.
