Daniel Cormier's coach supports his pupil's decision to retire: 'He's not the same'

Javier Mendez praises DC's legacy in MMA, but considers that veteran 'needs to stop'

After watching one of your best talents lose in UFC 252, the leader of AKA (American Kickboxing Academy), Javier Mendez, remains firm in the opinion that Daniel Cormier must maintain the position to retire. Without leaving 'DC's' legacy aside, the coach clarifies the determining reason for the former Ultimate champion to permanently retire from the sport.

“He (Cormier) needs to stop. He's 41 years old and the truth is that he's no longer the same person I was when he was 27. He's fallen a little in level,” said Mendez, in an interview with 'Hablemos MMA'.

Although he is talking about one of the best talents in recent MMA history, Javier knows the fighter like few others. The coach then tried to praise the achievements of the former champion of the under-93kg divisions. and 120,2kg. and guaranteed that the North American has nothing left to prove.

“He has a lot of obligations, with interviews, television and it's better that he doesn't fight. It's annoying that his last fight ended like that and he had to leave like that, but he's one of the best in the world. What he did is very big. He doesn't need to do more. (…) I don't want him to fight anymore and he doesn't want to fight anymore, because he wants title fights. He’s going to make more money from television and stuff, and if he’s not going to fight for a title, why fight,” he endorsed.

Finally, Mendez confirmed what he thinks of DC's career as a professional in MMA.

“He is one of the greatest in history and I am very proud of him. I love him with all my heart. He is a great person,” he concluded.

after the UFC 252, Cormier confirmed his retirement shortly after the defeat suffered in the trilogy against Stipe Miocic. In the main fight, Daniel ended up defeated by the champion in a unanimous decision by the judges and was unable to regain the belt he won in 2018.
