It's no secret that Demian Maia is close to hanging up his gloves. At 42 years old, one of the great icons of Brazilian MMA, however, can extend his career a little longer with the intention of breaking a historic mark within the UFC. In an interview with ‘Canal Encarada’, the São Paulo native spoke about his plans to become the fighter with the most victories in the history of Ultimate.

“My desire is to have one fight and maybe another. However, if my next appointment is my last, no problem. I'm fine with that. I think I fulfilled my role and I'm happy with everything I've done over the years (in MMA)”, said Maia.
The Brazilian's desire, however, is not just a utopia. The fighter, today, has 22 victories within the Ultimate and is just one triumph away from equaling the record of Donald Cerrone, who has 23. To overtake the North American, Maia would need two positive results in a row.
“Maybe I will become the fighter with the most victories. I'm one win behind Cerrone, so I know I'll tie with him if I win one more, however, if I win two I can surpass him. That would be something that would make me think about the possibility (of having two more fights)”, concluded Demian.
Maia is coming off a tough defeat against Gilbert Durinho, in March this year. After the setback, the São Paulo native had signaled that he would only do one more fight for the UFC. On that occasion, Demian even challenged Cerrone himself to share the octagon. In recent weeks, however, the Brazilian, through social media, promoted a verbal agreement to face the veteran Diego Sanchez.
