Chael Sonnen's coach will try to overturn Anderson Silva's victory due to illegal knee strike

The fight between Anderson Silva e Chael Sonnen, held last Saturday night (07), still generates something to talk about, and despite Spider's resounding knockout, the fight could have its result changed.

Anderson knees Sonnen

After Sonnen said, in the press conference after the event, that he didn't care about the legality of the knee applied by Anderson – a blow that changed the course of the fight – the North American's coach disagreed with his student's opinion.

Scott McQuarry declared, this Monday (09), in an interview with the North American website MMA Junkie, that he will file an appeal with the Nevada Athletic Commission, the entity that sanctioned the fight, to try to annul the victory won by Anderson.

“Obviously, he (Anderson) committed small infractions such as taking his shorts and lubricating his body (with Vaseline taken from Anderson's face). But the knee to the face… I saw the blow from several angles. I can see where he hit his face. It (the knee) slid down against the chest,” said McQuarry, who wants the result of the duel to be changed. “This should be considered a 'No Contest (fight without result)”, he added.

The coach said he will file the lawsuit as quickly as possible to try to annul the result and also harshly criticized Dana White, president of the UFC, who gave the UFC 148 best knockout bonus to the Brazilian.

VEJAStrkeforce champion says Anderson's victory “was dirty”

For me, (the knee) was extremely rude, it was ignored by the referee and everyone else, swept under the carpet. And to add insult to injury, (UFC president) Dana White even gave Anderson the knockout of the night bonus. I want to speed this up. I'm normally pretty calm about these types of things, but when I see an injustice that goes to this extreme and there's so much at stake, I feel compelled to say something. Where this goes, I don't know. For me, the best scenario is for the fight to be declared a “no contest” and we could have a rematch

Understand the rule
According to the unified rules of MMA, a fighter cannot land knees or kicks to the face of an opponent who is sitting, lying down or has at least three supports on the ground.

At the time Anderson threw the blow, Sonnen was sitting down, making it impossible for him to be hit in the face. The blow hit Chael squarely in the chest, but part of the Brazilian's thigh hit the American's face, which could be considered illegal. But referee Yves Lavigne considered the blow legal and let the fight continue, and soon after Anderson ended the fight with a series of punches on the ground.
