Retired since 2017, Anthony Johnson is willing to resume his MMA career. Former challenger for the light heavyweight title (under 93kg), the American revealed one of the reasons that motivated him to return to the sport and extend his career for a while longer. In a conversation with the press on 'Dominance MMA', the giant spoke about a specific fight that made him decide to step back into the Octagon.

“'DC' (Daniel Cormier and Stipe (Miocic) 2 (in August last year). This was probably the third or fourth fight I've watched since I retired. When I said I had closed the doors to MMA, I really had stopped MMA. At least, mentally, I felt like I had stopped. They were the two best guys at the time and displayed a lot of skill and talent. Everyone probably saw a normal fight, but I saw skill, talent, timing, changes. Everything was at such a high level. It made me say, 'I can still do this. So, I'm going to give it a chance'”, confessed the fighter.

Johnson, who became known worldwide in mixed martial arts for working as a light heavyweight, however, left open the category in which he will operate when he officially returns to the sport. According to the fighter, he can fight both in his original group and in the heaviest groups.

“I'm around 104, 106 kg. So I don't mind getting too heavy or just getting heavy. I will fight in both weight categories. Everything is open. I feel good. I'll probably fight at light heavyweight, but I'm not against getting heavier and fighting at heavyweight. Everyone in both weight divisions is very talented, so I’m looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead,” concluded the athlete.

Even with the renewed enthusiasm, there is still no word on when Johnson will be seen putting on UFC gloves. The expectation is that the athlete will be seen in the octagon later this year.
