Despite not choosing a new opponent for his pupil, Lambert stated that he intends for Colby to return to play against an elite fighter in the category. According to the coach, Covington's current position in the rankings favors a good fight option for the North American.

“Anyone in the top 10, for sure, or top 5. Colby is still ranked first or second (2nd), still at the top. So his next opponent has to be someone who excites him, who represents a great challenge for him, and puts him in the position to fight for the title again after the duel”, said Dan.

“He has a small fracture in his jaw. It didn't need to be reconnected or anything like that. He is recovering, resting and relaxing. I expect him back at the gym (American Top Team – ATT) in a few weeks full steam ahead, because that’s how he works”, he concluded.

after the UFC 244, the president of Ultimate, Dana White, stated that he would like to hold a confrontation between Colby and the former champion of the division, Tyron woodley. The clash would be in the company's plans for 2020, after Covington recovers from his injury.
