Cejudo admits difficulties in returning to flyweight: 'The weight cut is difficult for me'

Champion in two divisions, the North American may soon give up one of his titles and suggests remaining only among the bantamweights

The Ultimate flyweight (up to 56,7kg) and bantamweight (up to 61,2kg) champion, Henry Cejudo You are close to making a very important decision in your career. Without fighting in the lower division since January, the North American will need to decide whether he will defend his title in his next commitment or give up the title so as not to congest the category. The fighter then hinted that, due to the weight cut, he might choose to only perform among bantamweights. The statement was made in an interview with the program 'Brendan Schaub's Food Truck Diaries'.

“Cutting weight is hard for me, man. Getting to the flies is difficult. In my UFC debut, I didn't make weight. I didn't make the weight limit on a few occasions in my career trying to get to flyweight,” Henry confessed.

The athlete, who carries the nickname 'Triple C', in reference to his two Ultimate titles in addition to the Olympic medal, won at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, must remain active so that the division does not lose out due to the lack of turnover of challengers. However, the combatant seems to maintain the attitude of acting when it is convenient for him.

“No one is going to force me to fight anyone I don't want to fight,” said the American.

In theory, Cejudo should face, in his next commitment, his compatriot Joseph Benavidez, by whom he was defeated in 2016. Joseph managed to gain challenger status after beating the Brazilian Jussier formiga and thus occupied the number one spot in the division rankings. Henry, however, shows no desire to carry out the confrontation.

“No matter how much Joe (Joseph) has a victory over me, at the end of the day, the weight cut has a big influence,” he said.

Another important factor is that the athlete was successful in taking a risk in the bantamweight category. According to the champion, in the top group, your body responds better to actions and there is no suffering from the commitment to the scale.

“When I went up to rooster, I felt good. I had a good camp (training period) and I was happier. Happier, literally. Like, I lose 11kg to get to flyweight”, said the North American.

In several interviews, 'Triplo C' has highlighted his desire to face legends of the sport. On this occasion, in particular, the athlete mentioned two names with which he would like to try himself.

"I like Frankie Edgar and Dominick Cruz, at the time. That’s what motivates me”, he concluded.

In addition to the two former champions mentioned, Cejudo has also demonstrated his desire to face the Brazilian José Aldo, who recently made his move to bantamweight official and will make his debut in UFC 245, when he faces his compatriot Marlon moraes, in December.

Henry is currently 32 years old and has 15 fights, with 13 wins and two losses in his career.
