José Aldo dispels rumors of retirement and renews contract with UFC

Former featherweight champion signed a new contract with Ultimate for seven more fights; Agreement was reached before the fight against Volkanovski, in May

The Brazilian José Aldo he flirted with retirement in 2019 and even announced that he would like to have three fights in Brazil in 2019 and hang up his gloves in a row. However, the fighter renewed his contract with the UFC for another seven fights. The first fight under the new agreement has already taken place: in UFC 237, in May, in Rio Janeiro.

The announcement of the renewal was made by Aldo's coach, André Pederneiras, in an interview with the Combate channel website.

“We met throughout this period to understand what Aldo’s career would be like from now on. Despite his great desire to box, we still believe he has the potential to be champion again. We reached an agreement satisfactory to both sides. The old contract was replaced by this new one and now we have seven more fights to go with the organization,” he said.

Despite guaranteeing the continuity of Aldo's career, Dedé preferred not to announce his return, but said that it should only happen at the end of 2019.

“He arrived this week on vacation. The forecast is that he will return towards the end of the year, in November or December. Let’s see how the category plays out after the fight between Holloway and Edgar for the title and then we evaluate who could be a good opponent”, he added.

Aldo's career

José Aldo, who turns 33 in September, has an MMA record of 28 wins and five losses. The 'People's Champion', as he is known, reigned at featherweight from his creation, in 2011 until 2015 – when he was knocked out by Conor McGregor. He became champion in the weight class again in 2016, but lost the reign to Max Holloway on two occasions. In 2018, Aldo began his climb towards a new title fight, beating Jeremy Stephens e Renato Moicano by knockout. However, he was surpassed by the Australian Alexander Volkanovsky No. UFC 237, in the river.
