Yair Rodriguez closed the UFC's 25th anniversary celebration in Denver with a flourish by knocking out Chan sung jung. The Mexican was losing the fight until in the last seconds of the fifth round he landed an elbow that knocked out his rival. The spectacular triumph placed him back as one of the top featherweight fighters. Therefore, Zabit Magomedsharipov challenged the athlete to a confrontation.

In early 2018, Rodriguez was fired from the UFC after refusing a confrontation with Magomedsharipov at UFC 227, on August 04th. However, organization president Dana White reversed his decision, reinstated the fighter and the duel was rescheduled for UFC 228 in September. A chest injury took Yair out of the fight. He was replaced by Brandon davis.
Since August, the Russian has been asking for the clash to be rescheduled. With his rival's triumph at UFC Denver, Zabit asked the franchise president and matchmaker Sean Shelby for a fight with the Mexican.
