In recent weeks, some important cases of doping have come to light, including those involving former champion Anderson Silva and the top-5 welterweight Hector Lombard. In a statement given to the podcast he presents, Schaub explained that the use of anabolic steroids in the UFC is not severely punished, so that the infraction ends up being worth it for those who commit it.

“I would love to hear an argument that convinces me that I shouldn't take steroids. Just give me one. 'Ah, you'll never be world champion'. Is not true. Anderson Silva is a world champion. 'Ah, you'll never fight for the title.' Is not true. Chael Sonnen tested positive, fought for the title and trained on The Ultimate Fighter. 'You'll never main event an event.' In fact, it's not quite like that: alistair overeem already had a main fight, Antonio Pezão already had the main fight. Guys get caught cheating all the time and still get rewarded for it,” he explained.

“You know what makes me angry? It's not the fact that I'm not the champion. It's not the fact that I lost some fights and won others, but the fact that there is no reason for someone not to take steroids. In the UFC, there simply isn't. You are punished for a few months and receive a fine, but, anyway, we only fight every six months”, continued the fighter.

Schaub used as an example his fight against Lavar Johnson, in February last year, which he won by decision. Criticized for his bureaucratic actions, the heavyweight explained that it would not be prudent for him to fight openly, as he considered that Johnson was clearly breaking the rules. “At the weigh-in, I told Dana White [UFC president] that that guy was full of steroids. He laughed, but I didn't – I had to fight him. So, I didn't exchange punches with him, I just knocked him down, because he was full of steroids. And then a lot of people from the company, fans, everyone, criticized me for not exchanging punches with him. It doesn’t make sense,” he argued. Days after the fight, Johnson was caught doping with high testosterone levels.
