In one of the main fights of the night UFC 264, held this Saturday (10), in Las Vegas (USA), Gilbert Durinho once again proved his evolution in MMA. In the face of dangerous Stephen Thompson, the Brazilian fought a safe fight and controlled his opponent for almost 15 minutes. After three rounds, the Niteroi native was declared the winner in a unanimous decision by the judges.

With the result, Durinho wins again after the defeat to Kamaru Usman in the welterweight title fight (up to 77kg.). The triumph over the North American confirms the Niteroi native in second place in the rankings and keeps the Brazilian in the forefront for a future title fight.
Defeated by the Tupiniquim, Thompson momentarily loses the opportunity to get his third title shot in the division. Fourth placed in the category, the karateka had a sequence of two positive results interrupted.
After announcing his victory, Gilbert proposed two fights to Ultimate. In a loud and clear tone, the Brazilian challenged Jorge masvidal ou Nate diaz.
The fight
The confrontation began with the athletes studying each other in the center of the octagon and waiting for the best moment to attack. Wary of his opponent's karate base, the Brazilian saved his strikes. Durinho threatened with a left cross and a right, but the attacks went by in vain. Before halfway through the stage, Gilbert attacked the American's legs and tried to take the fight to the ground. Thompson defended himself well, but the Niteroi native continued to pressure his opponent against the bars. After much insistence, the Brazilian managed to take his rival to the ground. 'At home', the Niteroi native continued to look for transitions to try for a finish. In the final minute, Stephen managed to get up, but before that, he suffered a series of blows from the Tupiniquim. Thomson managed to free himself and the athletes accepted the open fight, but there was no more time.
Upon return, the fight resumed with Thompson taking the initiative with a low kick. Gilbert followed the strategy of the first stage and tried to find the best distance and moment to attack. After the opening minute, Stephen began to loosen up his game and hit the Brazilian with kicks to the waistline. Halfway through the round, Durinho began to unleash his attacks. The Niteroi native risked a series of crosses, but the North American defended well. Stephen changed the base and tried to induce the Tupiniquim to make a mistake, but Gilbert continued to pay attention to his rival's advances. In the final seconds, Gilbert went to the legs and put the fight down. The North American tried to get up, but the Brazilian remained 'glued' to his opponent. Towards the end, the fighters, almost kneeling, exchanged clean punches, but the round was over.
The last round began with Durinho hitting his opponent with a low kick. The Brazilian continued to show concentration and prevented his opponent's attacks. Thompson managed to hit Gilbert with a powerful right punch, which forced the Niteroi native to walk backwards. The North American tried to surround the Brazilian and shook the Tupiniquim with a round kick. Durinho went to the ground, but got up. Afterwards, the fighters went into frank exchanges. After an intense moment, Durinho went into a grappling fight and took Thompson to the ground. The Brazilian looked for transitions, while Stephen tried to get up. Intelligently, the Niteroi native stopped the North American and kept his opponent on the ground. In the final seconds, Durinho came close to a knockout, but there was no more time.
