VIDEO – From the hospital, Weidman speaks out after serious injury at UFC 261: 'A lot of pain'

Former middleweight champion reassures fans, regrets incident and guarantees return to the Octagon; Recovery should last between six and 12 months

Just over 24 hours after one of the most traumatic episodes in MMA history, Chris Weidman he spoke. Still in the hospital, after surgery to reconstitute the fractures to his right leg suffered in the fight against Uriah Hall, UFC 261, the former UFC middleweight champion (up to 83,9kg) reassured fans. The veteran also regretted what happened and admitted that recovery should take between six and 12 months.

“I have seen a lot of love and support. I haven't been able to spend much time with my cell phone. The pain is very great. It's approximately 3:30 am (on a Monday). I know that Uriah Hall It was super elegant, sad about what happened. I am very grateful. I came to know that Anderson Silva also said positive things. It’s very brutal, but I’ll get through it”, said the fighter, in a video published on Instagram.

Aware that he will go through a difficult recovery process, Weidman spoke about the surgery and set a deadline for returning to active duty. According to the veteran, the estimate could be up to a year away from combat sports.

“They (the doctors) said that, between six and 12 months, I will be able to return. (…) The surgery was a success. They placed a titanium rod in my tibia, which goes up to my knee, to make it straight and firm. My fibula was also broken”, confirmed the athlete.

In the confrontation against Hall, Weidman would try to achieve his second positive result in a row, something that hadn't happened since 2015. In the week of the fight, the American showed a lot of confidence due to a good performance. The clash, however, ended after just 17 seconds, when Chris fractured his right leg while throwing a low kick at the Jamaican.

Afterwards, the former champion collapsed and was promptly attended to by the Ultimate medical team. Upon leaving the Octagon on a stretcher, Chris received a huge ovation from the 15 spectators watching UFC 261 in the arena., in Jacksonville (USA).
