According to the report from the Legal Medical Institute (IML), Matheus' death was caused by an overdose. The fighter would have used cocaine before going into the fight.
Fernandes trained at 'Formando Champions', a social project that helps drug addicts through fights. The project coordinator, Vanderluce Cantuarias, reported the last moments of the fighter's life.
“He was tested on Friday and was clean, but former students told us he spent the night using drugs,” Vanderluce said.
“He didn’t appear to have used anything. He was sweating a lot, but that's common, the adrenaline of the fight. He did very well in the first few rounds, but he got hit in the third round and went down, and then he started having convulsions caused by the drugs,” he added.
“The event had a very good structure, even though it is an event that is just starting. They had a private ambulance that was parked in a private parking lot at the house. We, to help as quickly as possible, took Mateus straight to a car that stopped at the door. A Fiorino who took him straight to the hospital”, said Valmir Dieb, the fighter's coach and Vanderluce's husband, exempting the event held by Rêmulus Clube from any blame.
