UFC President reveals that Ferguson refused to fight for the interim title due to personal problems

Tony Ferguson won the right to compete for the lightweight title by knocking out Anthony Pettis at UFC 229, in October 2018. However, the fighter appears to have been passed over by Ultimate, at the moment the fight between Max Holloway e Dustin poirier for the interim belt in UFC 236. However, the organization's president, Dana White revealed that 'El Cucuy' refused to fight due to personal problems

“Tony is dealing with a lot of issues right now and can’t fight. I hope things get better for him and he can come back,” White responded to a follower on Instagram, according to the North American website Bloody Elbow.

Previously, White had named Tony as the next challenger for the linear title, currently held by Khabib Nurmagomedov. Therefore, Dana stated that Ferguson's absence did not happen at the will of the UFC.

Ferguson has remained undefeated since May 2012. Since then, he has had 12 UFC victories, including six submissions, three by points and two knockouts. Tony won the interim lightweight title by winning Kevin Lee in October 2017, but was removed due to a series of injuries.
