Anthony Pettis arrived in the UFC as the first challenger for the organization's lightweight belt. But the defeat before Clay guida, in his debut, reduced the North American's chances of reaching the fight for the title. However, a string of two victories, including a devastating knockout over Joe lauzon at UFC 144, he replaced Pettis as one of the main contenders for the belt.

Due to the balance in the first fight between Ben henderson e Frankie Edgar, a rematch was granted to Edgar, meaning that Pettis once again had to wait for his chance to fight for the belt. As a result, there was speculation that Anthony would move down to featherweight due to an immediate collision with José Aldo for the division title.

However, through his Facebook page, the fighter made a point of denying the news and guarantees that he will wait for the chance to compete for the lightweight belt in 2012.

“I’m not going down to 66 pounds (featherweight category limit) to fight Aldo,” Pettis wrote on social media. “The 70 kg category. (lightweight category limit) is my home and I’m going to get this belt”, added the American.
