Beating the women's strawweight weight (up to 52,6kg) is a recurring problem for Mackenzie dern. During UFC 224 in May 2018, the fighter failed for the third time at the weigh-ins after being 3kg over the category limit. Due to problems with the scales, the athlete was considered switching to flyweights (up to 57 kg). However, according to the North American website of the ESPN channel, the fighter will continue in the strawweight division.

After her participation in UFC 224, Mackenzie declared that she did not have the body to be a flyweight athlete. She also guaranteed that she would maintain her diet and training to continue in the strawweight division.
“Everyone here agrees that I have a body type that fits at strawweight, in the category I am, so the plan is to stay there. But we want to diet and train so that I don't have to cut so much weight, I'll cut very little. After the fight, I won’t go up much”, said Mackenzie in an interview with the Combate channel website.
Dern switched from jiu-jitsu to MMA in 2016 and remains undefeated after seven fights. The fighter has already had two fights in Ultimate. Her debut was in March 2018 when she won Ashley yoder at UFC 222. In her last commitment, the American submitted Amanda Cooper in the first round of UFC 224 in May last year.
