“Right at the beginning I tried to keep my guard up because he came with everything, like a crazy person (laughs). But I felt he was a little nervous. After that start, I felt more comfortable and was able to read his game. The first round was very even, but I didn't take any significant blows, and he was already pretty bruised on the face. In the second round I landed a good kick to the face and tried to put him down, but he saved it. He had defended my attempt in the first round and then defended it in the second, but I knew that at some point there would be a grappling fight. And when it happened, he wouldn't escape. And that's what happened. He defended my takedown, we were in a clinch, and he took me down with a single leg. I put him in closed guard and worked until I got the triangle and then got him in the arm-bar,” said Burns.
The Niteroi native has not played since August 2017, when his contract with One Championship, the biggest MMA event in Asia, ended. The victory, which interrupted a sequence of two consecutive defeats, gave the Brazilian a new lease of life.
“I felt a little rusty in the first round. But I think I had a good performance. I believe that things always happen for a reason. In the end, the opponent change ended up being a good thing. I had been stopped for a long time, I wasn't feeling that loose, but I managed to finish in the second round. Now I'm going to keep the pace in grappling and continue my preparation in MMA because I hope this year will be very busy for me”, he concluded.
Herbert plans to return to the cage on March 15th, when Titan will hold an edition of his show in Florida, where the Brazilian is based. But before that, he will compete for the welterweight belt at the Rise Invitational, a grappling event that takes place on January 25th in New York.
