Georges St-Pierre admits Chael Sonnen has the best weight-cutting solution

The former Canadian champion believes the weight cut should be addressed more broadly than it is now, but the change must happen before someone 'dies'

One of the big problems in professional MMA is weight cutting and this ends up generating a lot of discussion about what would be the best way to do this. In Ultimate, the official weigh-in was moved to the morning of the day before the fight, but the organization's president, Dana White, already wants to change it due to many fighters not being able to make weight. In an interview with the “Submission Radio” program, Georges St-Pierre admitted that the best solution was given by Chael Sonnen.

“(Sonnen) proposed to do a weigh-in on the day of the fight. So what he proposes, basically – we weigh in the night before the fight, like we normally do. But now, because the weigh-in is in the morning, people say, 'Oh, I have more time to recover,' so they try to cut weight,” said St-Pierre.

Extreme weight cuts are putting athletes in danger, with the welterweight Darren till. He had a very difficult weight loss, even failing at UFC Liverpool when he faced Stephen Thompson. The title challenger posted images of his weight loss and scared his fans.

“And it's sad to say, but sometimes I think, 'Are we going to wait for someone to die out there to change things?' I mean, it's ridiculous. So, Chael’s proposal is very smart,” said Georges.

Even without a tragic consequence in Ultimate, some fighters have already assured that they feared for their lives when making the weight cut.

However, it's the 'changing things' part where things get tricky. The Brazilian Athletic Commission does not think that the morning weigh-in is the issue and proposed as a solution: a wider range of weights within the same division. Some UFC fighters, like Kevin Lee advocate for more weight classes, an idea that was also part of the California Athletic Commission's original 10-point plan that even includes closer monitoring and possible weight class restrictions.

The former Canadian champion believes that the problem must be resolved more broadly. “I think they need to change not the individual, they need to change the system. I think the system can be better. I'm not saying that Chael's proposal is the best. But I think it's the best we know right now. I think that would be the best solution”, explained GSP.
