Chris Weidman wants to be the next middleweight title challenger

The American fighter believes that due to his career and having beaten Kelvin Gastelum, he is the natural opponent for champion Robert Whittaker

UFC 225 is less than a week away, where Robert whittaker won Yoel romero, another fighter has already made himself available to the organization to face the middleweight champion. The former holder of the category title, Chris Weidman believes he should be the next challenger for the belt.

In an interview with the program “The MMA Hour”, the fighter stated that he can beat the current champion. “Obviously, for me, the best thing would be to fight for the title. Fighting Whittaker, that’s a guy I fit well with and that’s a guy I feel like I can go and finish,” he said.

Weidman after losing the belt to Luke Rockhold In December 2015, he experienced a cloudy period in his career. The fighter had two setbacks against Romero (November 2016) and Gegard Mousasi (April 2017). In July 2017, he scored his first victory in almost two years by submitting Kelvin Gastelum.

“There are a lot of losses in Gastelum’s career that don’t feel so good. We have a [fight in] common: we fight with each other to answer the question. I went there and dumped him, he had the same opportunity and he went there and lost to me, so…,” Chris explained.

The former middleweight champion declared that he was one of the best Ultimate fighters in the category and should be Whittaker's next challenger. “If you look at my entire career, I've only fought the best guys in the world since I've been in the UFC and I've done really well, I've had the most title defenses and I've been through a bit of a rough patch. I got out of my way, I didn’t have any problems before this,” he concluded.
