After Bellator 200's withdrawal due to an injury to Mirko Cro Cop, Roy “Big Country” became the official reserve for the organization's heavyweight GP. According to Bellator president Scott Coker: “Roy is the man now. He will advance in the tournament if someone else can’t do that.”

In an interview with MMA Fighting, Nelson stated that he would be happy to return to the tournament or if he could face the winner of the heavyweight GP. “The tournament is interesting. If someone leaves, I'll go in. If not, I will wait and fight the GP champion,” he stated.

The American wants a rematch with Matt Mitrione, as he considers him the only fighter he would like to face at the moment. Roy Nelson also revealed the desire to fight with Fedor Emelianenko. “The only thing I want after facing Mitrione would be a moon with Fedor. It would be the “dream fight”, said Nelson.
