Five months after winning the title of flyweight champion, Nicco Montaño has not yet returned to training due to medical problems. This license is leaving the possible challenger, Valentina Shevchenko no patience. Nicco's first title fight would be at UFC Calgary, Canada on July 28th.
In an interview with the “MMA Hour” program, Shevchenko stated that the champion needs to decide whether to fight or leave the belt vacant. “We haven't reached the point yet where she has her belt taken away, but I think that would be the right thing to do. If you're not ready to fight, or if you don't want to fight, give up the belt. If you have health problems, and you won't be able to fight for a long time, you have to leave the belt, and as soon as you return, you will have the right to fight for it again. Either you fight to defend him, or you give up on him,” she explained.
According to the Kyrgyzstani, the UFC offered Nicco two dates: July 07th and 28th. The champion accepted, but later backtracked. Valentina believes that Montaño will be back in the Octagon by the end of August. “First Nicco said she would be ready to fight at UFC 226, July 7th. Then they offered July 28th, and she refused again. I don't know what she's thinking. Maybe you think she's done everything she could do in life and can retire now.”, she said.
Valentina also needled the current flyweight champion: “She can’t run forever. At some point she will have to stop. I'm here to do my job, I never stop training and I'm always in shape. I’ll wait for my chance and see how things play out.”
Shevchenko assumes that the delay in returning to fight is a strategy to avoid it. Which would make the Kyrgyz woman ask for another opponent. However, she guarantees that this will not happen.
