Away from the field since 2015, former England and Manchester United captain Rio Ferdinand announced that he did not receive a professional boxing license. Despite training five times a week since 2017, the British Boxing Board of Control refused his application for a professional license.

Ferdinand is trained by former world champion, Richie Woodhall. He wants to make his debut in the ring and return to high-performance sport.
“After notifying the British Boxing Board of Control of my intention to apply for a license, I received confirmation that they would not be reviewing my application at this time. To say that I am disappointed with this decision is an understatement,” he posted on social media.
Ferdinand claims that he was not given the chance to demonstrate his fighting ability through the standard assessment offered to others.
The Daily Mail newspaper reported that Ferdinand's move from football to boxing would be solely for a "television project rather than a serious sporting endeavour" and would fall within his role as a football pundit for BT Sport and the BBC.
