North American Gilbert Melendez should be the next athlete to leave Strikeforce for the UFC. After your teammate, Nick Diaz, abandon the middleweight belt to settle for Ultimate. Now, Melendez, the owner of the lightweight belt, is the target of Dana White, president of the UFC.
Shortly after UFC on Versus 6, Dana stated that he has already opened negotiations with Cesar Gracie's pupil and wants Melendez in Ultimate this year.
“We want to bring in Gilbert Melendez and we're looking at that now,” Dana said. “We will settle with Melendez as soon as possible,” she added.
The president also stated that although Gilbert has the Stirkeforce belt, he will probably not make his UFC debut fighting for the organization's title.
"It's a possibility. The point is that this division is very balanced and has a lot of good fighters,” he explained.
