The Cuban Yoel romero campaigned extensively to combat Michael Bisping, when the Englishman was still middleweight champion. However, he ended up losing an interim title fight to Robert whittaker and moved away from the duel with his rival, who ended up facing Georges St Pierre. Upon learning of the duel, Romero said he was sure that GSP would beat Bisping.

In an interview with the North American program The MMA Hour, the “Soldado of God” explained that the performance of St. Pierre, who hadn't fought in four years, was no surprise to him. Romero also said he was sure that the Canadian would leave the title vacant as soon as he won it.

“It's not a surprise. I don't think Bisping's defeat came as a surprise to anyone. I knew he would lose. He doesn't have wrestling or grappling, he doesn't know how to fight on the ground or defend himself from takedowns. I knew that Georges St Pierre would win and know he would leave the sport again. This is a very dangerous category, full of talented people. I applaud GSP. He is very smart. He thought: 'Okay, I'm going to win another belt over this guy, which is very easy. I’m going to kill him and have a great Christmas”, and that’s what happened”, analyzed Romero.

Although St. Pierre's departure from middleweight has not been confirmed, the expectation is that if he returns to MMA, it will be at welterweight, a division in which he was the dominant champion between 2008 and 2013. The Canadian is trying to an intestinal infection and admitted that he may retire if the improvement is not satisfactory.
