Cormier defends Oezdemir and asks for fight with Swiss: 'I hope it happens'

Cormier reiterated his desire to fight Volkan Oezdemir, verbally agreed to face them in February 2018

If it depends on Daniel Cormier, current holder of the UFC light heavyweight belt, Volkan oezdemir will be the next challenger for the title of the under-93kg category, a duel that is verbally agreed to take place in February 2018. For DC, not even the recent accusations against the Swiss, arrested last week after getting involved in a bar fight, take away the title shot of the European. For the champion, his rival only acted in self-defense.

“I believe the fight will still happen. From what I understand, he was defending himself. And if these guys were doing anything and they can prove it was in self-defense, you have the right to defend yourself. So, if he was defending himself, the fight will still happen. I hope it happens as scheduled”, declared Daniel in an interview with the “Talk and Talker” podcast.

Knocked out by Jon Jones In July of this year, Cormier, 38 years old, regained the light heavyweight belt after the executioner was again caught in an anti-doping test, being automatically removed from the position. Previously, DC had reached the top for the first time in 2015, when it finished Anthony Johnson. He defended his title against Alexander Gustafson, at UFC 192,  and again against Johnson, at UFC 210, in addition to winning Anderson Silva in a fight that wasn't worth the title, at UFC 200.

Volkan oezdemir, 28 years old, had a meteoric rise in the UFC. He arrived at the organization in February this year, but has already had three wins at home. The debut was beaten by points Ovince St Preux. In the sequence, two lightning knockouts over Misha Cirkunov, in May, and Jimi Manuwa, in July, totaling a measly 70 seconds of performance. In total, there are 15 wins and only one defeat in his professional record.
