The heavy weight Derrick Lewis was forced to leave UFC 216 on the day of the fight, after suffering from chronic back pain. He would face Fabricio Werdum, in a duel that could change his career if he won. However, the problem was so serious that he had no option but to cancel the fight. Two weeks after the show, “Black Beast” admitted to crying over the cancellation and reported being depressed ever since.

“I was definitely depressed. It was horrible mentally, much worse than a defeat. I have never had this experience before and I hope nothing like this happens to me again. I'm quite depressed. I'm not going to lie to you, I cried a lot. I haven't cried in years and I was crying a lot. My coaches and my wife were trying to comfort me, but I wouldn't listen to them. I was crying a lot”, declared the American, who assured that he was not worried about the extent of the back injury.

“Now, anything can happen. We are waiting for the test results to start my treatment. They (doctors) want to know what the problem is. One of the doctors I spoke to said he can release me now, but it depends on me. I want to take every precaution to actually see what’s wrong with my back,” he said.

Without Lewis, Werdum ended up facing Walt Harris, which would catch Mark Godbeer in the preliminary portion of the show. With his sharp jiu-jitsu, the Brazilian had no problem submitting “Big Ticket” with an armbar in just over a minute.
