In an interview with the North American website MMA Junkie, Rockhold said that he tried to negotiate duels with members of the top-5 rankings, but no one wanted to face him. Former champion of two divisions in the WSOF, Branch was the most relevant name that agreed to measure forces with him.

“He’s a top-10 opponent. I mean, I looked around and tried to take on everyone. Nobody wanted it. Nobody signed the contract. Now, we have an opponent. A top-10 guy. I'm taking him seriously.
