At stake are immortality as combat sports icons, the most expensive fight in history, the pride of representing boxing and MMA, as well as a first look at the future of boxing.

See the following five reasons:

1 – Floyd Mayweather: the greatest of all time?

PUBLICITY:

It's no wonder that Floyd Mayweather is considered one of the best boxers of all time. After all, his numbers speak for themselves. In 49 professional fights, 100% success rate. Of the 49 victories, 26 were by knockout and 13 by points. Another 'scary' fact. Money never even had a knockdown, which further highlights his superiority over his rivals.

Without acting since September 2015, when he announced his retirement after overcoming rival Andre Berto, Floyd is also a commercial phenomenon. Over the 21 years of his career, he earned around R$2,1 billion, becoming, when he was still competing professionally, the highest-paid athlete in the world.

This Saturday, after a two-year hiatus, the now forty-year-old fighter will have another chance to achieve his achieved status. “No one can brainwash me into believing that Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali were better than me,” said the boxer two years ago, placing himself above boxing legends.

2 – Conor McGregor: the chance to write his name in boxing

the trajectory of Conor McGregor in MMA it is practically impeccable: featherweight and lightweight belts in the biggest event in the world, knockout in just 13 seconds in the arch-rival, salaries outside the standard of the sport, 18 knockouts in 21 victories and so on. However, the Irishman's new focus is to write his name in the history of gentle art.

It is no exaggeration to say that McGregor is already the big winner of the fight with Floyd. In addition to the astronomical purse he will receive, the status of a sniper, without the responsibility of succeeding inside the cage, could help Conor shock the world again. 11 years younger, the youth also plays alongside the European. If he becomes the first man to take down Floyd, the Notorious will definitely secure his place among the all-time greats in the world of fighting.

“It’s not going to end well for Floyd and it’s not going to end well for all these people who are doubting me. Once again I’m just working to educate the whole world about what a real martial artist is,” said McGregor.

3 – Clash between sports

In front of Floyd Mayweather, Conor McGregor he will be representing not only the UFC, but MMA as a whole. It is the opportunity that sport has to break the last frontier and become, in fact, a global phenomenon. Despite being the fastest growing sport in the world, mixed martial arts still encounters resistance in many sectors of society. McGregor can help end the final stigma that MMA is too violent depending on how he behaves, in victory or defeat.

For Mayweather, boxing pride is also at stake. After more than 20 years undefeated and without a defeat on his record, the North American has an obligation to beat a newcomer to professional boxing. Even though McGregor has experience in martial arts, the difference in knowledge in the noble art means that a defeat by Floyd could even be catastrophic for the sport, as it would prove, in theory, that MMA fighters are superior to boxing athletes, including in noble art.

4 – The most expensive fight in history

When the subject is the salaries that the fighters will receive, the numbers are scary. Mayweather will earn US$300 million, approximately R$942 million at the current price, while McGregor will receive around US$100 million, approximately R$313 million. The amounts invested in combat are not far behind.

Just in sponsorship, to give you an idea, more than R$108 million will be invested. Bookmakers, always busy with big fights, will raise R$93 million. The T-Mobile Arena gym in Las Vegas, with capacity for 20 people, is expected to make a profit of around R$77 million. For those watching on TV, the expectation is that May-Mac will sell more than R$1,5 billion in pay-per-view packages.

“The difference between this fight and the fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao is that Conor’s reach in the world is massive. This is the fight that the world will watch”, declared Dana White, president of the UFC, which was echoed by Leonard Ellerbe, Floyd's promoter. “This is the fight that will bring out all the Hollywood stars: Jay-Z, Beyoncé, all the Hollywood actors and actresses, the NBA stars.”

5 – The future of boxing?

At 22 years old, Gervonta “Tank” Davis is the main bet of the athlete agency company founded by Mayweather. As the event is almost entirely his, the boxer made a point of putting one of his big names in action on the same night. Davis puts his undefeated record of 18 professional victories (with 17 knockouts) on the line against Francisco Fonseca.

Against his rival, “Tank” would defend his International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior lightweight world title. However, he didn't make weight and lost the belt, which will go to Fonseca if he wins.

But the most important thing for the promise, who has more than 200 victories in amateur boxing, is to appear in front of the world. The bet is that, as the co-main event of the night, Davis will be exposed to millions of new fans who can help him become a new Floyd Mayweather. Although, with 17 knockouts in 18 fights, his style has been more compared to that of Mike Tyson. Either way, Gervonta could establish himself as the future of boxing this Saturday.
